Welcome to my Blog

I am a grandmother to 4 little girls. I blog about the things I make for them, review patterns, provide tutorials on how I've dealt with techniques or problems, which I hope may help others, and give links to the (mostly) free patterns I use. Every so often, I do a 'Best of..' post listing the best free patterns I've found under specific headings - babies, girls, boys etc. Enjoy the Blog!

Links for where to buy fabrics on-line (with UK delivery in mind)

A sewing friend and I recently did a lot of research on where to buy fabrics suitable for baby clothes. Many now are only on-line, but where they have a shop, I've mentioned it. So I thought I might as well share the fruits of our labours. Delivery shown is for UK mainland. I will keep this as up to date in terms of web links as I can - already two have been removed and three added in the space of a couple of months. So my apologies if the links don't all work. And by the way - I take no responsibility for prices or postage having increased since I did my research! Next update: 20th July 2020.

Group 1

These are ones I discovered when hunting specifically for jersey prints for kids - most have other stuff as well. Prices shown are typical prices shown as at December 2019 - there may be cheaper and more expensive fabrics available. Note that jerseys are often sold in wider widths than woven fabrics - I haven't taken that into account in the prices I've given - these are simply as per the web sites. (Check the other list below as well, as some do knits - but not specifically for children.)

My apologies - I've no idea why some of the text has turned to blue - I've repeatedly tried to correct it. It looks Black when I am in edit mode!

These are others UK suppliers I've used or have had recommended, not specifically for jersey. Though many do do nice jerseys.

Bluenaboo - ebay,  same as AKAS above. Much as above but worth checking the ebay site as they may have free delivery.
BST Fabrics
This one is new to me - I'll be trying it! They do have some kids knits, so I could have included them in Group 1 - but they have a big range of other things too. On the face of it their prices look very reasonable. And they have a good haberdashery range. They have a shop in Tyne and Wear. Normal second class postage, free with purchases over £30.
Calico Laine
Cottons for kids £6-£9, printed fleece £7 per metre. £2.49 postage, free over £35. Cottons, polycottons, fleece, identifiable kids stuff, not much jersey, reasonable prices, haberdashery incl Pryn 38 mm elastic @£2.99

Have lots of inexpensive fabrics, and also do bulk discounts for quantity; 9 stores, all in the South or South East of England, and has been going since 1971. Only added on-line shop more recently. But it's been going strong this year. Free to collect if you live nearby - the click and collect is due to restart in August 2020..
Higgs and Higgs
£8-£14 per metre, pretty fat quarter bundles for c £14, postage £1.95 min. some nice jersey knits including for kids, and needlecord - not dirt cheap but have some nice sale things incl bundles for quilting.
ITokri
This is an unusual on-line shop, in that it is a shop in India, who specialises in Indian types of fabric, but this includes some lovely lightweight cottons. The postage to the UK is about £6 +, which may seem a lot - but the fabric is so inexpensive, that I found it still worth paying the postage to get 4 lovely cotton woven fabrics to make a couple of tops.
Julie's Crafty things ebay shop
Everything priced per half metre so not as cheap as it looks - £3-£6 for half metre cottons. But great kids fabrics and interesting fabrics, also some cheap patterns.

Lady Sew and Sew
£7-£12 per metre cottons, £12 - £15 for jersey per metre. Postage £1.95. Some quite nice jerseys but would have to scroll through to find kids' stuff. Also good quilting stuff.
Lovely Jubbly
Beautiful designer cottons, expensive as priced per fat quarter (and you can get by the metre); normal Royal Mail postage. Shop in Bournemouth.
Livingstone Textiles Bridport
£9/metre jersey. £3.95 postage. Not nearly as much on-line as in shop! Fleece prices ok on-line but most of the rest seems more expensive than in-store..
MacCulloch and Wallis
Listed because they have tartans. from £10/metre.  No idea about postage. In general quite expensive, prices are ex-VAT.
Metre Rabbit
This seems to have a good choice of knits (but also of other fabrics). I think it may be a bit of a one-woman band, as she say it may take a number of days to despatch. Postage not very clear - I think it means 1st class postage sigend for is £2.50 for under 500 gms.. Or you can collect, but I couldn't find out where from! This is also on Facebook.
Miss Cloe Fabrics
Web site takes a bit of navigating, I had to use the search box to find fabrics. But they are cheap. And they do wide elastics = hurrah! Prices basic Royal Mail secnod class i.e. from £2.99.

Polin Fabrics
This entry is work in progress, they have some very cheap (and interesting looking) polycottons and fat quarters, and will also cut fabric into 6" squares etc. Postage done on weight, site owner says usually up to 2m is £1.50, then 3m up to 2kg is c £4. However, no delivery information on the web sie.
Pound Fabrics
This may be worth a look for value - but the minimum order quantiy is 3 metres. Still, with some fabrics at £2 a metres for 62" wide, you can't complain at the min 3 metres rule! And they also always have some fabrics, mainly lightweight, at £1 a metre. They also have some cheap bundles. Quite a lot of jerseys, with some that would be suitable for children. Postage costs, however, start at £3.99, max £9.99. (Well, I suppose 3 metres can weigh a lot!)
Plush Addict
£7.50 to £9.20 for 150 cm metres of fleece. Weight based postage from 99p. Free over £40. Mainly fleece and specialist fabrics.
Remnant House
£2.75 + for cottons per metre, £4.95 flat rate postage, free over £30. Dress fabrics - cheap - lots of kids fabrics under a header plus haberdashery, lots of fleece and specialist fabrics incl tartans; some cheap children's fabrics
Scanlan Arts
Very cheap mainly cotton and polycotton fabrics (mainly wholesale?) £2.95 postage minimum. Based in Kent but no outlets that I could see.
Sew Affordable
This is a company I haven't yet used but it appears to do what it says on the tin - the prices are very reasonable. If you are looking for something very specific you may not find it, but there are some real bargain. Delivery charges normal second class Royal Mail.

Sewing on-line
Cottons £11 per metre, £2.99 postage, free over £30. Nice cotton prints, couldn't see any jersey.
The Little Kraft Shed
Shop in South ~Lakeland. These are mainly wovens, some nice designs but the non-sale fabrics are not cheap. However, they do have some nice things in the sale, at £6-£8 per metre for cotton. Group 3

This third group is new. They have no shop, and no web site, only a Facebook page. I personally hesitate to recommend anyone who only seels in this way. However, I suspect this will be a growing trend, so I've included this new category. So you can look at them and join them if you like. I think you probably have to sign up to their Facebook page even to be able to see what they have to offer..

Coalville Fabrics
This was recommended by a number of people on Facebook.  However, I can't find what they sell - I haven't signed up. But it was enthusiastically recommended, because they are pretty cheap (I gather). It has about 6000 Facebook members (Jan 2019). However, since I posted this, there have been complaints about their slow service. Maybe that applies to many suppliers now. Just check it out first.
Fabricanza
Has about 3000 members.
Manisha's Fancy Fabrics and Trims
Actually, this is currently the only Facebook supplier I have bought stuff from. She 'does what it says on the tin'. What she suppliers is unusual and fancy fabrics and trims, so when you need those, she has a good choice. However, personally I can't cope with the on-line auction approach to buying fabric, so I've just contacted her separately, to see whether she has what I want.
