Welcome to my Blog

I am a grandmother to 4 little girls. I blog about the things I make for them, review patterns, provide tutorials on how I've dealt with techniques or problems, which I hope may help others, and give links to the (mostly) free patterns I use. Every so often, I do a 'Best of..' post listing the best free patterns I've found under specific headings - babies, girls, boys etc. Enjoy the Blog!

Snappy Top

As I look through my photos, I see there are  projects I photographed but didn't blog about - too busy at the time! But I like to write up my experiences / efforts, especially when trying a new free pattern.

Here's one from May 2015.

This is made from the Snappy Toddler Top pattern from Prudent Baby.  Below, you can find out more about this pattern, and the dress I made from it.
I do remember having some problems in getting the gathered part of the dress to fit in the markings on the yoke. I have a feeling I may have had to remake the top. You can see from the picture of Jane above (about 15 months old) wearing it, that it looks a little tight round the armholes.(The pattern was for 12-18 months, but she was tiny then.) The fact that the next picture below is taken AFTER the one of her wearing it, and is back on my cutting mat, suggests to me that it came back to my house for the necessary alteration.

However, Prudent Baby have recently (03/17) reissued the pattern in more sizes, from 6 months to age 5/6. So I'm guessing that any problems with the markings will have been corrected.

Instead of hemming round the armholes. I bound them with satin double-fold bias binding - about half an inch wide folded. This pokes up a little bit as it's quite stiff, but it looks pretty. I also used some of this bias binding, cut in half lengthways, to make some piping. I can't remember now whether I put cord into the middle of this to make true piping, or just the tape. and I can't really see from the pictures. Either way, I like the effect.

You can see below that I cheated on the buttons - I'm hopeless at button-holes, so I put on press-studs and disguised this with a fancy button on the outside.

I'm certainly going to give it another try. I have some more material in this slightly satinized fabric, from a dismantled adult blouse. It had never been worn, as the neckline was too tight. I like the Snappy Toddler Top in these shiny fabrics. So maybe I'll have a go with a second one. But I will try the revised pattern.
